Music Advertisment Analysis

I have chosen Jack Penate with his album 'Have i been a fool' in '2007'

This will aid me when it comes to my own advertisement because I will be able to use elements of the one above in my own work, meaning that the ending outcome will hopefully look as though my work is professional in order to achieve the best possible grade.

Lyric analysis and their importance (bloodstains)

This is my first idea of what I could possibly do with my lyrics and what I would like to show within a music video. This exercise will aid me with my own narrative as it allows me to be creative and also starts me off with initial idea for my music video. Lyrics are important within a music video because when reflected by the video, they can show such a deeper meaning to audience members which then allows them to convey emotions towards characters and also to the song itself.

The song is all about how the couple are realising that their current situation is not working, and how they both feel that they are limited and not happy anymore. I am using this in my narrative of the wife/ female partner, as she comes to the realisation that she is not happy without her husband/ male partner, and therefore she corrects the situation and joins him on the other side.

Digipack Analysis (1-3)

Although the design is simple, it still shows everything that it would need to show in order to appeal to audience members, for example all the information is still shown that the audience would need to know, and there is still a pattern and theme that would relate to the music the cd holds. The colour is gold and blue which are quite elegant colours and show connotations of peace, which also shows connotations of what the overall album will contain, the font as well has grace and elegance which connotes the artist/band will have the same airs and graces as the digipack. The image used is based upon flowers and wildlife which shows conventions of indie pop which shows that that is what the artist/band is also a part of that genre, which allows audience members to understand what type of genre the music is.

This design is different to other designs which, if I was to sell my product, would already stand out to the public because it's not a normal three fold pack. This means that it would be more likely to attract audience's attention compared to a simple three fold. The colours used are basic and complement each, they also match the font colour and style, for example the font looks as though it has been hand written which shows connotations of the album being personal, therefore allowing the audience member to link themselves to the issues faced within the songs, for example a failed love. The images used on this digipack shows birds flying away which connotes that themes presented within this album could be about breaking free from their situation they find themselves in, meaning that the digipack, it's overall design and the album content link together and fit under the genre key conventions of 'indie pop' as locations used in such genres include woodland/ elemental surroundings, and this digipack shows birds flying free under a lake, which links with the water element.

I like the attention to detail on this pack as it allows the audience to know exactly who the cd is by and also gives an idea of what the album is about, for example the design shows hands being held, which connotes that the album is about unison and relationships. The colours used on this design are earthly colours, meaning that the colours connote that the album is going to be 'close to home' as they will be exploring elements of realistic problems, such as relationships, which is shown by the images. The font used is easy to read and works well with the conventions of the band (indie pop/rock) the font as well as the images (of the band in a field) also applies to the key genre conventions of indie pop, which links the band, digipack design and most likely the content of the album together, so audience members understand what they are going to be listening to and will not be disappointed, if they already like the band, the script isn't for everyone.

By looking at these digipacks, this will aid me for when I come to do my own as I now have an understanding of how important font, imagery etc... is when trying to appealing to the target audience of my music video.

What is the importance of a Digipack and a Magazine Advertisement

A digipack usually made out of cardboard and/or plastic which is able to hold a CD or DVD which is used as the merchandise of the artist, for instance, the artist passenger, also my chosen artist, released his first album to the public (all the little lights) in  digipack in the style of a book, containing lyrics, and the two Cd's of his work, acoustic and non-acoustic.
A digipack is important because it promotes the artist and also appeals to audiences, as most CD holders, are not of the style above, meaning that audience members are more likely to be attracted to the digipack, it is also a means of linking the artist to multiple items of merchandise, for instance, music videos, iTunes artwork and posters etc...

A music advertisement does what it says on the tin, and will give out information that audience members will need for the up-coming album from an artist/band that they like and listen to. The music advertisement will most likely consist of just enough information to keep the audience in the loop, but also wondering what the album will entail, for example, just telling the audience the album's name and the date the album drops.
The music advertisement is important because it also allows the audience to create their own hype about the album release, for example the use of placing a social network site on the advertisement means that the audience can they learn more stuff and talk about the advertisement and the band with others who are waiting for the release. It is also a way of letting people, who possibly aren't the target audience to be involved and promote the band, meaning that their audience would multiply and therefore work in favour of the band/artist.

By doing this it allows me to identify key aspects of a digipack and also a music advertisement, which will then aid me on my own work when it comes to creating my own digipack and music advertisement.

Cultural effect model- how could i apply this to my own work?

The Cultural effects model looks at mass media and what effect it has on the audience, entwining with the audience theories we have looked at, such as the two step flow and the hypodermic needle theory(although this theory is out of date and not often used).

This theory looks at the argument that the media's influence on it's audience on long periods of time can influence how the audience look at society and also how they can think, for example the representation of the female gender has changed how it was viewed 20 years ago to how we view the 'ideal woman' now (eg the change from Marylyn Monroe to such 'role models' as Miley Cyrus)

By taking this theory in practice to my own work, I would say that I can use this theory in a positive way. My narrative is all about how a woman cannot live without her man, and does indeed go to extremes to be with him again, I know she does this by killing herself, i'm not suggest that's what I want people to do, quite the opposite. What I would like to do is to show the message of how love, true love is not uncommon if you look in the right places, and when you find it, do hold on to it and try your best to not let it go, for instance this message can be shown with the idea that the woman and man have broken up (pretend in MY narrative he did not die) and it shows how the woman is then being rational and intellectual by trying her best to fight for what she loves (pretending that she doesn't kill herself, like she does in MY narrative)

- By looking at this theory it has allowed me to then understand what I would need to do in order to send out a message in my music video when I come to creating it, meaning that hopefully this will aid myself so  I can achieve the best possible grade.

Lip syncing: What is it and it's importance

Lip Syncing is used is most (nearly all) music videos by the artist/ band of the song in order to give the illusion of a live performance (or sometimes everyone, for instance Nickleback with their music video 'Rockstar' shows groups lip syncing to the song)

If a music video is to be shot in slower motion, then the artist/band will lip sync to a faster version of the song so when the track is slowed down, the lip syncing won't be out of time with the track

'Story of my life' by One direction used this for the entire video which is explained on their behind the scenes video shown below

Lip syncing is important because it allows the audience to feel as though they are watching their artist actually perform rather than just watching them do exactly what they are doing (the illusion is the thing that they prefer to see) meaning that if the audience want to see them performing live, then record labels will always show lip-syncing because it attracts an audience to which they want to see.

Music video's within my chosen genre analysis (1-2)

The music video 'This is Gospel' by Panic at the Disco, the genre of this band is indie pop/ rock.
The narrative within this music video is constructed to show the singer of the band fighting to be free of the 'darkness' which he does in the end as he battles, and finally goes into the light, leaving his body behind to be consumed by the darkness.

The artist is seen to be in casual clothing, which allows the audience to relate and link themselves to the singer with ease, meaning that the audience will also relate to the video's imagery and the message of the lyrics. Shots that stand out to me are the birds eye views of the singer fighting off the doctors as the chorus is sung, as it makes the singer look vulnerable, but also connotes that he is trying to fight and will not stop fighting for his own life, and will not be tied down to something he doesn't want (which also explains the use of ropes trying to pull him back into darkness)

The video is set on a black background, and the location seems not to chance, e.g. although it is clear that within the narrative the singer dies on the hospital bed and is then placed within the coffin, we are shown mid way through the music video that the location does not chance but the props do in order to give the illusion of a scene change. The dominant colour used is black to which the singer is trying to escape, which shows connotations of the singer trying to escape something that is giving him pain, which in the case of the music video, is a partner, 'if you love me let me go'

The editing used within this music video fits the tempo of the song, and is fast cut, however the use of slow motion is used on many different cases, for instance on the lyric 'if you love me let me go' the singer is seen in slow motion surging from the bed, which connotes the actions importance, the same is used when the singer breaks out of the coffin full of water.

There is always movement in this video, from the camera and also always from what's being filmed, the camera however helps tell the narrative as it changes shots from birds eye, to close up's.  The shots used are simple, for instance close up's and mid shots, however the camera tilts up and down, for instance when the singer is strapped to the hospital bed, which establishes to audience members where the singer is so they are not confused.

When it comes to audience members I would say that there is no apparent threat shown within this video, and although some elements may seem unsettling, for example placing a needle into his arm, and being nailed shut into a coffin. The music video although fits within the genre target audience as it shows the band's singer, and also uses imagery which reflects the lyrics.

'Let me go' symbolic imagery of ropes and hands holding him back meaning that he can't escape connotes that the person can't let him go and he can't continue with his life, however he breaks free of the ropes at the end of the music video.

Analysis two:

The music video 'The Kill' by Thirty seconds to mars shows the narrative of the band arriving at a hotel for a holiday, and are greeted with a note asking the band to stay out of one room, room 6277, the music video then follows the band on their 'get away' and the events that come to follow.  The music however does not play the song from beginning to end, it however stops and starts, giving the illusion that the music video is more of a short film, which gives the video more depth and more of a chance for the narrative to develop.

This music video contains Intertextuality, with the film 'The shining' which then allows audience members relate and also recognise locations and characters, such as the woman who came out of the shower (2:56) and the bartender (4:34) although the are played by other actors, or the band members themselves. By using Intertextuality, it widens the audience member's to reach out to both fans of the film 'The Shining' and also the band 'Thirty seconds to mars' meaning that it plays as a positive for both media products, and fans of the band are more likely to search for the film, and fans of the film are more likely to then start listening to the band.

'This is who I really am' is shown in the video to be the lead singer fighting himself, therefore showing connotations of the singing to be fighting against his past to stay the man he has become 'inside, finally found myself, fighting for the chance I know now, this is who I really am' (3:36)  The editing within the video is fast paced to match the tempo of the song, with mostly a split screen, for example when the band members are greeted with themselves, the editing does not glitch and looks as though there are actually two of the same person in the room.
Towards the ending of the video the band and also other actors are placed into a 'warped split screen' as though the audience are seeing double, which links with the video and also the lyrics as the song is about not caring what people think anymore, and they can do what they like, say what they like about them (the band) but they have changed for the better and intend to stay that way 'come break me down bury me, bury me, I am finished with you'

The use of conventions is clearly made out to audience members as being an 'alternative' band due to the use of dim lighting, and also costume and make up on the band members, for instance all dressed in black with painted black nails, and to then change into suit and tie with the black eyeliner staying as a constant iconic feature to the band, there is also live performance of the band towards the end of the music video looking as though they are in period dressing which suits the era of the hotel, which again allows audience members to identify what band they are watching and also what genre. The band are also seen to be playing themselves and not a character, which allows audience to establish who the band are without confusion.

The use of shots within this music video is varied and always changing from one shot to the other, therefore keeping the attention of the audience, the shots include close up's, medium long shots establishing shot etc...
The music video also uses a pan (1:25) across the counter of the bar, as well as high angles which show connotations of the band members being vulnerable towards the events to unfold in the rest of the music video (eg. the fast cuts to the bloody woman and the creepy teddy bear) The shots help to tell the narrative because it allows audience to decode from the connotations and also allows the audience to have an inkling that something is not entirely right with the hotel.

I would put this music video to the rating of a 12 because although the use of threat is not throughout the video, there are some scenes that viewers may find disturbing, such as the woman covered in blood. The music video however does fit the genre target audience because all themes used fit within the conventions, reflect the song lyrics, and also relates to fans of the film 'The Shining' and the band.

By doing this it has aided me with my own music because now I know what elements I can replicate when it comes to my own music video (such as birds eye shots, minus the creepy doctors) as then it allows me to achieve the best possible grade that I can to when it comes to make my music video.
