Filming and editing Schdule (updated)

Although I would like to think that I'm organised, it turns out that I'm not...

Due to weather, actor availability etc... I was not able to film on the days that I would like to film, so I created another schedule which I followed stuck to...

Editing Schedule

By creating a  schedule for when I wish to edit, allows me to then dedicate time so then I am not rushing around last minute trying to create a decent piece of coursework in a couple of hours.

The list is as follows:

Tuesday 14th October- upload footage and piece together the narrative using my shot list

Tuesday 28th October- upload footage and add to already edited piece

Tuesday 11th October- upload footage and add the rest to my edited piece

*other editing dates will be subject to change due to the fact that I might *touch wood* have to re-film some shots due to bad framing etc..  *

Filming/blocking Schedule

In order to give myself enough time if needed to re-film and also with the editing of this music video, I have created a filming schedule in order to keep myself in order, so then I am up-to-date and on time with my filming/blocking. This also aids me with knowing what is going on with everything whilst filming (and before)

Auditions: 4th of October

Thursday 8th of October -  Blocking for shots 1-23 *Both characters are needed*

Friday 9th October - Interior shots of female *within the storyline her suicide, male not needed*

Saturday 11th October- Blocking for the entirety of location one *full cast*

Sunday 12 October - Filming of the entirety of location one  *full cast*

Saturday 25th October-  Blocking for the entirety of location two *full cast*

Sunday 26th October-  Filming of the entirety of location two *full cast*

Saturday 1st November-  Blocking for the entirety of location three *full cast*

Sunday 2nd November- Filming of the entirety of location three and pizza. *full cast + the pizza delivery guy*

*If needed dates will be added in order to re-film certain points of my narrative*

Asking permission to use the song 'Bloodstains'

Here is the email that I have sent to the record label in order to ask their permission to use Passenger's song 'Bloodstains' which is track 11 on the album 'Flight of the crow.'

Digipack plan (two)

This is the second idea for my Digipack with design and also what style of fold I would like.
The inner design is a photo that I took myself, and the other three are from Google images.

Storyboard (draft)

This is my draft of a storyboard, these three pages are not all of the shots within my music video, but they are the most commonly used shots that are repeated, as most music videos do. Some shots within these storyboards are also iconic camera shots and movements that are possibly not repeated but are interesting shots, for example the tilt down her arm starts at her closing her eyes, and then tilts to reveal her arm which is covered in blood.

By doing this storyboard it will aid me to when I come to film my music video because I will now have an understanding on how the shots should look, and also in what direction I am going in regards to progress.

Inspiration for my Music video

When I was listening to the song, my initial idea was to the narrative which ended badly, for example with my post regarding my pitch ideas, the narrative I created showed how the woman felt trapped in the relationship and found it hard to leave him because it would break his heart, although she did it anyway.

My actual narrative now, does indeed have elements from my pitch within this narrative (only this time she don't want to leave him, she wants to be with him) being a teenage girl, I enjoy my chick-flicks so of course they came to be good inspiration.

Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind:

This film I used because it's all about a man who goes to a clinic to have memories of a past lover removed, only half way through the process he decides that he doesn't want to lose her, and so he tries to include her in memories that she doesn't belong in, for example his childhood.)

I used this similar idea with the flashes back and forth between reality (packing up his things and the hand held 'home movie' of the husband filming her unpacking their new house) because I believe it will allow audience members to link themselves to the characters, because although not all of us have been married and lost our other half, we have all broken up with someone, or lost a loved one, meaning that audience members will be able to reflect off of the emotions I hope to show to my target audience (already established in other blog posts)

Titanic:

I know my music video does not include any ships, and floats made out of doors, but the initial idea that 'my heart will go on' tugs on my heartstring, specially the ending which shows rose being reunited with jack on the titanic in her beautiful dress.

I wanted to use something similar, to show to audiences that, although it is cliché, love can last a lifetime, and in the after-life, which is the reason why I decided to have my characters reunite in their own little piece of heaven, just as Jack and Rose met on theirs.

Kiss:

Kiss a book which I read as a child, with the narrative of a girl who falls in love with her childhood friend, who is confused about his sexuality and ends up being the centre of bulling because of that.

I know my narrative doesn't contain anything to do with confusion of sexuality, but a key point within this book is that both the female and male protagonist finds peace with a series of novels they began writing at a young age in a shed which became their 'kingdom of ice and show'

Although my narrative is not set in Narina, the characters I constructed had their own 'kingdom of flowers and grass' which will be shown in photographs and also flash-backs to when the couple were happy and full of life.

Whiskey:

This isn't the title of a song or a film, I literally mean the drink. From all the stories you hear over social media and from those around you, drinking whiskey in particular is seen to be used to block out memories of things you wish to forget, and can lead to awful behaviour and addiction. Alcohol

is also seen to be Dutch courage under circumstances, and this is why Whiskey is an inspiration towards my music video (no I didn't drink it when I was storyboarding) because it shows how my female protagonist is at the end of her tether, and doesn't know what way to turn or what to do, meaning that when she turns to a bottle of Whiskey, it shows connotations about how she has been thinking about seeing her husband once again, and just needed some courage in order to see him one more time.

Design ideas for my digipack

Something like this layout would be good idea, as it links within the lyrics 'bloodstains in the snow' and the imagery also shows a guitar, which is the main instrument that the artist, and also his entire album uses, which allows audiences to understand the link between the artist and his merchandise

This design also links within the key conventions of an indie pop music video as it  looks at elemental locations, which are quite realistic (for example we have all seen a fence in the snow) however the snow does not link to the locations I will be using in my own music video, which might confuse the audience members. When looking at layout, I would place the guitar on the left hand side of the digipack, with the single figure to be masked by the Cd, and the song lists to be on the right hand side. I thought of the font to be easy to read, (Such as Trebuchet) as it allows the audience be able to read it. I would also have the font red because it would link to the lyrics 'Bloodstains in the snow' as the red font would be on a white background, which would be the snow, allowing audiences to understand how, although from first glance, the digipack design and the music video seem not to link, when they actually think about the lyrical meaning, which is what the artist wishes the audience would do with his songs, it allows them to then actually understand the links.

By using a template such as this, it allows me to still link towards the conventions, for instance, the male and female are seen in a loving embrace in the woods and she is holding flowers, which links to the narrative (love) and also the key conventions found in an indie pop music video (elemental areas)

My idea, if I was to use something similar to this image, the song list would be placed on the right hand side, with the lovers on the left, leaving the Cd to be in the middle, which would be on the back ground of the woodland area, still keeping with the conventions. The font would be something easy to read ( Such as Courier) in black ink, because the design in rather important within this music video, and therefore I would like my audiences to be drawn to the imagery before they are greeted with the song list (the songs would not be the examples I have used, I was rather hungry when I created this)

Lip syncing, first test and final

As there will be lip syncing in my music video, I have decided to lip sync in the well-known duet 'Need you now' by Lady Antebellum. By doing this test, it allows me to have a good understand of how lip syncing works, and also just how much time it may take to lip sync my own music video when it comes to editing.

By doing this, it has aided me with my editing skills, in order to then allow me the best possible chance to achieve a high grade when it comes to making my own music video.

Lip syncing is important when it comes to creating my overall
music video because, if the lip sync in not correct, it can throw the entire emotion, message and tone of the overall music video because the target audience will be more focused on the poor lip syncing than my use of mise-en-scene, lighting etc...

Here was the final, fully edited test.

Because this is a rough idea of how I want this music video to look like, and what types of shots and transitions I would like, not every cut has a shot, and many have 'various shots' placed on them because I still need to work out exactly what I want to use.  However I have been able to establish that I would like to use point of view shots as well as cross fading (a lot) because it shows how the main focus (the woman) is feeling and how is coping with the shock of losing her husband.

Music Video from my Chosen Artist

As I have chosen to create a music video of 'Bloodstains' which is a part of one of the many EP's from the artist 'Passenger' I have decided to look as some of the official video's to understand if there are any themes which reflect into his lyrics and his songs, I have chosen 'Hearts on fire' which Is one of his newest songs from the new album 'Whispers'

From what my research tells me, the music videos from the artist always include him performing (lip syncing and/or playing the guitar) with the artist in elemental surroundings, for example in his most recent music videos, he is seen in woodland
areas and fields (Hearts on fire, and Scare away the dark)

The music video will show a narrative that reflects the lyrics, for example this music video of 'Hearts on fire' the narrative shows the artist walking around a wood finding items that reminded him of a loved one, to which he then stores in a time capsule, which he revisits many years later. The music videos narratives are also left to the audience interpretation, for example, my interpretation of this music video is that he does love her, but he missed his chance, so all the shots to the woman in the white dress walking in the wood, and the older version of the same person is walking around the wood trying to catch up to the girl to tell her, but because he missed his chance, she moved on, leaving the younger version of the artist to bury her memory (quite literally) because he couldn't have her, and the older version of the artist then returns to her memory because although he buried her memory, she is still very much alive in his memory.

The editing within this music video is slow paced and matches that of the tempo of the song. The shots used within  this music video revolve mostly around medium close up's, medium shots, close ups and also long shots which are mostly of the artist himself within live performance, and of the location, which links with the genre conventions of an indie pop artist and/or music video. This music video in particular is mostly about the artist and his performance rather than location, actors etc...

The music video however has been created to promote and entertain target audience members. The promotion used within this music video is the use of naming the song with it's artwork which can be found on download websites, such as 'ITunes' which promotes to audience members to go and buy the single 'Hearts on fire'. The entertainment within this music video is that of the narrative, which is all based on love and how, par truth and a common interest in each other, timing plays a big part in time, and if the timing is not right, then the relationship may not happen, or if it did, it is most likely to fail. The music video is entrainment because it allows audience members to link their own real life situations

with that of the characters within the narrative, for example some audiences may relate to the actor playing the older artist, and how he hasn't stopped loving her, which is represented by the use of seeing her with a fresh bunch of lavender, and then several years later, seeing the time capsule opened to find, in the older man's hands, the same lavender that she once had, which also shows connotations of how, although everything will age and expire, it doesn't mean that the memoires/ feelings expire with it.

By doing this it has allowed me to have an understanding of the artist's music videos and their genre's generic conventions, which will aid me when creating my own as it will allow me to show my understanding of the key conventions.
From looking at this music video by my artist, I have noticed certain things that the artist is 'branded' with, for example the element of live performance is always found within his music videos, as well as a construted narrative, which audience members can clearly understand and follow. Therefore having seen this music video, and also 'Scare away the dark' as another example, I have decided to make sure my own music video shows a constructed narrative, as well as live performance from the actor, in order to keep my music video close to the brand and also the generic key conventions of an 'Indie pop' music video genre.

Representation in a music video

A lot like the key convention, each music video genre has their own representation of certain things, for example gender and ethnicity.

Indie pop:

Most of the time in this genre, women are seen to be either heart breakers, or elements of beauty, for instance, in the song 'Tenerife sea ' by indie pop artist Ed Sheeran, 'You look so wonderful in your dress.  I love your hair like that, and in that moment I knew you best' is rather clear he is talking about her physical beauty, as well as her inner beauty as he knew her best in that moment, showing connotations of his understand and love for this woman. Another example from this artist can be seen from his hit single 'Don't' which looks at women being heart breakers 'but it was never just fun and I thought you were different' and also with the line 'don't f*** with my love' which is repeated throughout the song, can give I would say strong evidence this woman broke his heart.

This representation is looked to by other artists such as 'Passenger' and 'Daughter' with many songs based on their past experiences with love, the most common one known from both of these artists is 'Let her go'                                                           and            'Youth'
'Only know you love her when you let her go..' 'Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest'

Hip-Hop:

Women are represented within this genre to be images of beauty and looked to on the basis of 'to be seen and not heard' giving what I could only say as a band influence to younger generation on how to treat those of the opposite sex, none the less this is media and therefore the representation stands and is there for me to learn and evaluate. Seen in mostly every song, ranging from Jason Drulo to Jay-Z in the song 'Wiggle-Wiggle'  the lyrics 'Damn girl you have a bright future behind of you' and 'Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle.'  He talks about her physical feaures and nothing else. The lyrics from '99 Problems' by Jay-Z  'But a pussy havin' no goddamn sense, try an' push me' possibly doesn't talk about her as a thing of beauty, but does imply that she doesn't have any sense and is stupid, showing connotations of the idea 'seen but not heard'

Boy Bands:

Gender shown within this genre is similar of the two above, for instance from the same artist 5 Seconds of Summer the songs 'She looks so perfect' and 'Amnesia' both talk about girls differently. 'She looks so perfect standing there' which in itself looks at her as a thing of beauty and how she is admired by the band, following similar representation as of hip-hop on a lower level. 'Amnesia' however looks at the female as a heart breaker with connotations that the man still loves her, '...with the pictures on my phone, I'll admit I like to see them i'll admit I feel alone' and 'I wish that I could wake up with Amnesia and forget about the stupid little things, like the way it felt to fall asleep next to you...'

Within my music video I will looking at the representation of gender and love in a indie pop fashioned music video. How I will show this representation will mostly be within the use of colour, costume and the direction of the actors, for example who is more dominant out of the pairing with such things as screen time and who has more. My choice of actress consists of a tall, skinny blonde haired beauty, wearing red and lipstick which can be seen to be the "girl next door"
I have done this because "the girl next door" representation is quite a normal thing for society to be faced with, which allows the audience members to feel comfortable watching the music video, which would then lead to the audience member buying into the artist and their album. I have chosen a heterosexual couple because again it seems normal as it is a typical representation of a couple, which follows the same reasoning behind why I have chosen my actors.

The idea of a music video is to escape your own world and to be obtained by the world of fictional characters, which I would like to think I have created, as although she does kill herself, the entire narrative can be seen to be very romantic, and an act of love that audience members would enjoy watching as they can relate to the characters emotional responses, for example " I can't believe he walked out, she loved him, and she couldn't live without him. It reminds me of Sally and Tom..."

Also by doing this it has helped me to understand of how representation is shown in different genres and it has also allowed me to gather what representation I will be using and how.

Research into my chosen artist

Michael David Rosenberg, a.k.a Passenger:

Genre: Indie Pop

Conventions seen within indie pop music videos,

-Set in one locations such as a studio, park or wood etc...
Mostly low budget
-There will be an element of live performing, such as lip syncing or playing a guitar
-The live performance is broken up between the narrative.
-The narrative does not have to be complex, mostly based around love, or events we can all relate to, such as moving away from home.

A little about Mike;
Born: 17 may 1984  in Brighton & Hove, East Sussex in England.
Family: His mother was British and his father was Jewish

Mike began learning classic guitar at the age of 14-15, and when he should have been paying attention at school, he was paying attention to his dreams of aiming for sold out tours and making a name for himself.  He left school at the age of 16 and spent the next few years busking in England and Australia. He still lives in Brighton

Target audience:

Target audience is between teenager to adult (16-24)

The artist connects with his audience by writing songs that reflect experiences within his own life that others can relate to.

Record Labels:

Nettwerk: founded in 1984, it is the 'umbrella' company of the Nettwerk records,  Nettwerk management, Nettwerk producer management and Nettwerk one publishing. This record label produced his first album in the public eye 'All the little lights'

Black Crow Records: Founded in 1981, and is the 'off-shoot' of the former 'Rubber-Records' which is owned by MWM records in Newcastle. MWM records also deal with most of the production and sales including marketing of the artist, the album  'Whispers' which is his latest album was released with this record label this year (2014)

The artist also released some solo projects (EP'S) which include, in order 'Wide eyes blind love'  and 'Divers and submarines'

- Passenger was actually a band which released 'Wicked man's rest' which after this the band split, and Mike kept the name Passenger as he liked it.

The song I am using 'BloodStains' comes from the album 'Flight of the crow' which had the record label of Inertia (IE) in Australia, which was re
